Breastfeeding is big part of how I momma, a huge part. Feeding that baby with my own milk is the loveliest thing I've ever done. The nourishment runs deeper than nutritional benefit, it slows me-- puts my pieces together. It let's me sing and stare and stay for a while. It brings together rhythmic bellies breathing up and down. My forearm anchored by my strong hand. His hand exploring, learning and finding a place to linger.
For the past few weeks nursing has given rest on planes and trains, comfort in new places. On days apart, it helps us to re-center. And lately, nursing has brought out his humor-- giggling rosy cheeks.
In case it helps anyone in any small way, here is our everyday-- Early on we had problems with an overproduction of milk, high fevers due to mastitis, and pumping frustrations when I returned to work. I bookmarked KellyMom.com and both Spenser and I referenced it for access to quick, evidence-based information on how to help my body find that perfect balance. I prefer the hand-pump over electric and store fresh milk in my Kleen Kanteen.
Cotton muslin was used as a swaddle, burp rag, and nursing cover. Also, white noise is wonderful. Find a source.
Truly, my number one for confidence and ease as a new mother is the Ergobaby carrier. I need that thing like water. Ergo, thank you for helping me catch the train/plane/bus on time. And thank you for letting me walk into my favorite coffee shop because Lord knows a stroller would never fit.
Nursing in the Ergo came easier once Aris was old enough to sit lower with one foot on either side of the carrier. Also, love the Solly Baby Wrap for infant babes and the Sakura Bloom Sling, which is in a couple pictures below. They continue to be a worthy investment for our family.
"It seemed right to appreciate the equal beauty of the moment between my son and his mother. Lauren glows while nursing, there are no moments when she is more whole. I wanted Elizabeth to capture Lauren and Aris in their element-- at its most natural form, in nature." - Spenser, my love.
